When it comes to options for towing a Gooseneck trailer on Ram trucks equipped with the factory Gooseneck Prep Package, there are a few options out there. The system permits for an easy drop-in ball. Mopar offers one - but at their usual inflated prices. You can get a great Gooseneck ball from Reese for a lot less money, and it comes with everything you need to tow anything requiring a 2-5/16" Gooseneck hitch.
The #30140 kit includes a Pop-In Gooseneck Ball, two safety-chain attachments that go into the 2 outer pucks toward the rear of the truck, a storage bag, and a cover that you can use for the center hole where the gooseneck ball goes (if you have lost your factory cover).
The whole package weighs about 11 pounds, and can easily stow under the rear seat.
Installation of this kit takes about 60 seconds if you go slow - it's that easy.
To install the ball, remove the factory cover over the center hole. Lift up on the handle in the top of the ball and turn it 90 degrees.
When you do, you will see the ears retract at the base.
Drop the ball in, and turn the handle 90 degrees and let it drop into place. The ball is done.
That's it for the ball.
To install the safety chain attachments, remove the covers over the two pucks closest to the tailgate.
Take one of the safety chain attachments and lift up on the lock assembly. Drop it into the puck, turn it 90 degrees, and let go of the lock assembly. It will drop into place and lock the attachment into position.
Repeat the process for the other one, and you are done.
Reese also offers their part number 19314 3" Gooseneck Ball in case you have occasion to tow something requiring that size of ball.
I can't say much more about this kit than that it works. It's easy, fast, and is rated to 30,000 lbs. It's light to carry, weighing in at about 11 lbs for the whole package. It can stow easily under the rear seat when not in use. If you need to tow a Gooseneck trailer, this makes your setup painless.
There are also alternatives to convert a 5th wheel trailer to use a gooseneck ball. We will be exploring those soon!
